Increasing demand for thoroughbreds beyond racing

Want to join our passionate, dynamic staff and make a real difference in the landscape of Thoroughbred aftercare? The RRP is looking to fill two positions: development team member (in-office preferred, can be remote for the right candidate) and program assistant (in-office). The application period is now closed.

Development Team Member

The Retired Racehorse Project has an immediate opening for a member of the development team, which is a full-time position that reports to the Development Director. The RRP offers health insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, and unlimited paid time off. Candidates who are able to report to the RRP’s Edgewater, Maryland office are preferred, but remote work may be considered for the right candidate.

The primary duties of this position are:

  • Under the supervision of the Development Director, execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy which includes cultivating, retaining, and growing:
    • Corporate sponsorships and advertisers
    • Donors
    • Grants
    • Major gifts, planned giving, and endowments
    • In-kind donations
    • Makeover vendors
  • Take part in outreach, networking, and relationship building functions
  • Work across departments to coordinate sponsor servicing, donor administration, ad fulfillment, and fundraising campaigns
  • Participate in programmatic activities as needed
  • Other tasks as assigned by senior staff

Necessary Skills

  • Experience in any combination of the following areas: nonprofit development, sales, and customer service.
  • Strong computer knowledge. This position heavily utilizes a web-based CRM and task management platform, Microsoft Office suite (particularly Excel), Adobe Acrobat, and other web-based applications.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills and attention to detail
  • Experience in either sport horse or Thoroughbred racing industries whether as a professional or amateur.
  • Occasional event attendance requires long days with prolonged periods of standing and walking as well as lifting and carrying objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Available to travel (<10%) for events as needed with adequate notice. Must be available to attend the Thoroughbred Makeover, held annually in Kentucky in October.
  • Must have driver’s license and own transportation.

This position is best suited for a driven professional who is looking to refine their skill set in the non-profit sector with emphasis on nonprofit development and Thoroughbred Aftercare. High school diploma or equivalent plus a minimum of two years of full-time experience in the workforce is required. The salary range for this position is $35,000 (assistant level) to $55,000 (manager level) annually, dependent on experience.

Program Assistant

The Retired Racehorse Project has an immediate opening for a Program Assistant, which is a full-time position that reports to the Program Manager. The RRP offers health insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, and unlimited paid time off. The Program Assistant must be able to report to the RRP’s Edgewater, Maryland. Remote candidates are not being considered for this position.

The primary duties of the Program Assistant are:

  • Support the Program Manager in competition-related aspects for the Thoroughbred Makeover, which includes customer service for Makeover trainers, records management for entries, scheduling of ride times, stall assignments, and processing trainer applications.
  • Fulfill online store orders and manage inventory
  • Packing and shipping as needed (silent auctions, promotional materials, event equipment, mailings)
  • Assist in moderating RRP social media pages and processing customer service tickets
  • Data entry/maintenance projects
  • Other tasks as assigned by senior staff

Necessary Skills

This is an entry level position which is best suited for a driven individual who is looking to develop transferable professional skills. High school diploma or equivalent is required. The salary range for this position is $32,000 to $45,000 annually, dependent on experience.
